A broken window pane can be a real headache — whether it’s from a stray baseball ⚾ or years of wear and tear. Luckily, this is a manageable fix for many homeowners — and an even easier one with the help of a professional.

In this post, we’ll break down:

  • ✅ When a window needs repair

  • 🧰 How the process works

  • 💲 What it typically costs

  • ⏱️ How long it takes

🔍 Signs You Need a Window Pane Repair

If you notice any of the following, it may be time to repair or replace your window glass:

  • 🧼 Cracked or shattered glass

  • 🌬️ Drafts or temperature loss near the frame

  • 💧 Fogging or moisture between panes (especially with double-pane windows)

  • 🌬️ Whistling or rattling during wind

🛠️ Step-by-Step: How a Window Pane is Repaired

1. 🧤 Safety First

Broken glass is dangerous — always wear gloves and eye protection.

2. 🔧 Remove the Broken Pane

Carefully remove all remaining glass. Use a utility knife and chisel to remove glazing putty on older windows. Newer styles may have clips or glazing stops.

3. 🧼 Clean the Frame

Remove any old putty or sealant and smooth out the surface.

4. 📏 Measure & Replace the Glass

Measure the window opening, subtract 1/8" from each side, and have a new pane cut to size at a local supplier.

5. 🧴 Install the New Pane

Apply glazing putty or silicone around the frame and gently press the new glass into place.

6. 🧷 Secure & Seal

Use glazing points for wood windows, then apply fresh glazing compound for a proper seal.

7. 🎨 Paint & Finish (Optional)

Once the compound cures (typically 5–7 days), you can paint the frame to match your interior or exterior.
